The Letter to the Galatians proclaims that Christiantiy was dependent upon nothing but God's free gift of grace, bestowed on all who would accept that gift by faith, Gentile and Jew alike. Because it declares this universality and confutes the Judaizing Christians, the letter is one of the great theological cornerstones of Christianity, according to Dr. Barclay.

Book Description
In this and its companion volume, Dr. Barclay makes the most difficult book in the Bible easier to understand. In his introduction he examines areas such as the characterstics of apocalyptic literature and the nature of Caesar worship, John was, as Dr. Barclay shows, "soaked and saturated" in the Old Testament, and most of the imagery he employs is drawn from that source. Dr. Barclay does more than clarify the meaning of the imagery. His commentary covers many interesting subjects, such as the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the probable facts about John exile on the island, and the meaning of Christ's knocking at the door.

From its earliest days as a renegade religion in the Roman Empire through its various schisms and splits to present-day disagreements between Eastern Orthodox followers, Roman Catholics, and hundreds of different Protestant denominations, Christianity has been a source of great controversy--most of it centered on the reading of Scripture. There are those Christian conservatives who view the Bible as the literal word of God and the events detailed therein as historical fact. Other, more liberal Christians see the Good Book primarily as literature, a metaphor for how people should live. Mine the pages of the Biblical Archeological Review and you'll find scientists trying to prove or disprove the historical reality of Old and New Testament events and structures--everything from the Ark of the Covenant to King David's palace. In An Introduction to the New Testament, author Raymond E. Brown, a Catholic priest, ignores the swirl of conflict surrounding the Bible as historical artifact, concentrating instead on the message it contains.
Father Brown analyzes each of the 27 books in the New Testament, devoting painstaking attention to sources, dates, and authorship, as well as commentary on the spiritual, historical, and thematic aspects. He believes that modern-day Bible readers can only interpret it within its historical context. An Introduction to the New Testament, read with a Bible in hand, can only enrich and deepen your understanding of that germinal religious text.
From Library Journal
During his career, Brown (emeritus, biblical studies, Union Theological Seminary, New York) has enlightened and challenged scholars. Here he brings his extensive knowledge to bear in a volume primarily for beginners, though it will serve equally well those who are not. Because of the intended audience, he has made certain choices about content and form. First, he focuses on the established 27-book New Testament canon based upon the "wide agreement about the twenty-seven works to be included in a normative or canonical collection." Second, he deemphasizes the prehistory of the documents (sources, editions, and so forth) and emphasizes the documents in their canonical form. He begins most chapters with a "General Analysis of the Message" and addresses issues such as authorship, date, and composition afterward. So, for example, readers are helped to understand the individual messages of Matthew, Mark, and Luke without getting bogged down in the "synoptic problem." Due to his emphasis on the finished form of the New Testament documents, even those who disagree with some of the author's critical judgments will benefit from this volume. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.?Craig W. Beard, Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham Lib.

From Library Journal
Perhaps the best known and most popular Roman Catholic biblical scholar, Brown here answers the questions he claims are most frequently asked him by laity and clergy at his lectures. He arranges these questions according to broad themes. His responses represent middle-of-the-road Catholic scholarship in a thoughtful and readable manner, though his defense of Mariology is somewhat convoluted in the context of the New Testament record. A brief final section suggests methods of outlining the Catholic approach to the Bible in a way that responds effectively to fundamentalist objections. Even non-Catholics should find the work informative. Recommended for most libraries.

The Twelve Prophets offer a panoramic view of Israel's religion during one of the most critical periods in the nation's history. From the false confidence at the time of the monarchy, to the despair during the Exile, and finally to the period of new hopes and aspirations after the Exile, these books provide an understanding of the transition from an old state religion to the birth pangs of a newly formed community of God's people. Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, and Jonah are the figures considered in this first of Peter C. Craigie's two-volume work.

In this startling new way to read the parables, Ford unlocks seven of the longer parables attributed to Jesus. He focuses on the two major characters in each parable, who are separated by social inequality, and he entirely bypasses the common approach that assumes that the superior character represents God and the subordinate character the Christian believer.
Drawing on his own therapeutic training, Ford offers unique insight into the psychodynamics at work in the parables. He proposes that the two characters are equally balanced in their multiple misperceptions of each other and shows how Jesus' stories invite listeners to advert to issues of conflict and power and to struggle toward reconciliation.

From Beliefnet
Girzone's ah-shucks Messiah is so likeable and so popular, in fact, that people are being tempted to trade in the real Jesus for Joshua. And this, I suspect, is what is bothering Joseph Girzone. How else can we explain Girzone's latest book, "Jesus: His Life and Teachings As Recorded by His Friends Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John." If the latter four names sound familiar to you, then so will the book. Girzone has taken the four Gospels and stitched them together chronologically--and that's all. No chestnut hair or khakis, just plain Jesus, with stories in a slightly different order than the version you will find in your pew and without those pesky little numbers getting in the way.
For those who have imbibed deeply of Joshua, "Jesus" still provides a corrective. Not that Jesus never sounds like Joshua. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus admonishes, "So do not worry, and do not say 'What are we to eat?' or 'What are we to drink?' or 'What are we to wear?' . . . Set your hearts on the kingdom first, and all these things will be added to you besides." That is pure Joshua. But Jesus also says this: "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I in him." As a result of this sermon, "Many of his disciples returned to their former way of life, and no longer accompanied him." That would never happen to Joshua.
Joshua is our Messiah, the one we want, the one we can understand. He can entertain, and he can even inspire. But in "Jesus," for the first time Girzone gives us revelation. And lo, it will be the poorest seller of them all. (Beliefnet, May 2000)

Hahn, a master apologist and Roman Catholic theologian, unearths wonderful truths about the Christian God as seen through Old Testament promises and New Testament fulfillments. Though a few mispronunciations are evident to the astute listener, Paul Smith fully commits to the text. However, the subheads, very evident as such in a printed book, are not clearly identified as such in the narration and seem to start unfinished sentences, giving a halting effect to the reading. One disc contained numerous small skips; it may simply be a faulty copy, but this reviewer suspects that it might be a product glitch. However, neither the glitch nor the subhead problem should deter interested listeners. S.M.M. AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright AudioFile, Portland, Maine

In all honesty, when I first tuned into Genesis the PBS series, I wasn't really in the mood to hear a cabal of hyper-intellectual critics enlighten me with their interpretations of an already widely familiar religious text. Within seconds of watching, however, I was completely engrossed in a conversation unlike any I'd experienced before--lively, intelligent, generous, illuminating, exciting. If you didn't catch the series, or even if you did and you still want more, pick up this book. It expands in places where the program had to be cut and is just as riveting. The commentary and the "already familiar text" prove as multidimensional and visceral as life itself.
From Publishers Weekly
Having brought Joseph Campbell's ideas on world mythologies (The Power of Myth, 1988) and the intricacies and rhythms of modern poetry (The Language of Life, 1995) to a general audience, journalist Moyers now seeks to do the same to stories contained in the book of Genesis. In this companion to the PBS series of the same name (to air October 16), Moyers gathers the voices of numerous thinkers and writers: novelists Mary Gordon and John Barth; theologians Elaine Pagels and Phyllis Trible; biblical critics Robert Alter (whose own translation of Genesis has just been published by Norton) and Walter Breuggeman; and cultural critics like Karen Armstrong and Carol Gilligan, among others, into a fascinating, often tendentious, conversation about the living character of stories that address everything from the creation of the world and the temptations of the first couple to the internecine struggles of Jacob's family and the slavery of Joseph. In the end, however, listening in on these discussions is a little like sitting in on a therapy session, listening to participants rant about the ways they have become victims of these grand cultural stories. For example, in discussing the story of Abraham's rejection of Hagar, novelist Bharati Mukherjee complains that the story has reduced women to wombs. Moyers enjoys his role as middlebrow guru, orchestrating these disparate voices into a merely edifying conversation that tries too hard to make Genesis into a weekly supplement to Time magazine?as when, in speaking of the temptation of the first couple, Moyers remarks rather simplistically, "Genesis confronts us with many tempting questions." (Oct.) FYI: Doubleday is simultaneously releasing a study guide for discussion groups and for personal use, Talking About Genesis: A Guide ($4.95 paper ISBN 0-385-48580-8), as well as a 10-cassette audio version of Genesis: A Living Conversation ($29.95 ISBN

From Library Journal
This book, directed largely to a Roman Catholic lay audience, shows how ordained ministry developed from the ministry of Jesus, to that of disciples and apostles, and to the ordained ministry of the church which culminated in institutionalized and authoritarian ministry of the pope. O'Grady encourages the ordinary faithful to participate in rethinking Christian ministry and rescuing it from formalism. For large public libraries.

The books of Samuel present a drama in which the principal players are the God of Israel, the prophet Samuel, and the first kings of Israel, Saul and David. In his masterful commentary David F. Payne shows that this Old Testament book combines history and theology as it narrates Samuel's virtues, Saul's defeats, and David's successes in relation to God's activities during an important phase in the life of Israel.

In his perceptive commentary, David F. Payne helps readers see the importance of this pivotal biblical book and guides them in applying its message to today's world. Deuteronomy consists of three major addresses to the people, in which Moses repeats the laws already set forth. Why then, is Deuteronomy necessary with its repeat of law and covenant? "The internal logic of Deuteronomy," writes Payne, "provides one answer to this question: Israel's forthcoming entry into the Promised Land would create a dramatic break with the past, as a wandering people became a settled nation, with an entirely different way of life. So Israel's great leader, Moses, takes great pains to make sure that Israel will be faithful to her God-given law and covenant, and will remember her formative past." Readers, then as now, are called upon "to renew their covenant with their God; or ... to examine their hearts and lives, and then to reassert their loyalty to God's calling and service."

This revised edition includes updated references and clarifications of meaning, so that the commentaries become even easier to understand. The volumes are completely reset in new type, so that reading them is easier on the eyes. Dr Barclay's original style and popular appeal remain unsurpassed. He presents the results of contemporary scholarship to the ordinary reader, yet his method and his language are never academic, but always warm and human.

When life gets tough, sometimes a warm drink and a good book are the only solution. A Cup of Comfort supplies both in one: stories of just a few pages each that will leave you feeling as refreshed as if you've just sipped a cup of tea, and entirely caught up in the moments described by the stories. Small enough to tuck into a purse or coat pocket, this is the perfect book for your daily commute or coffee break. Recurring themes of generosity, compassion, and mysterious blessings are the only thing the stories have in common, as each is written by a different author in an entirely different style. While many of them focus on a particular event such as a holiday, a wedding, or a death, there are plenty that reveal the larger lessons and surprises in a walk to the store or a parent-teacher conference. If you're searching for a bit of encouragement and a reminder of humanity's positive side, you're sure to find a treasure or two in this wise little book. --Jill Lightner

This detailed handbook, clearly printed in double-columned pages, is a thorough examination of the Old Testament and its ancient Near Eastern sources. Like its companion, World of the Bible (Eerdmans, 1986), the handbook was prepared by a distinguished group of contempoary Dutch scholars. While the lay reader may feel intimidated by its microscopic approach, students and scholars will welcome yet another example of fine European scholarship.
