Catechism of the Catholic Church is the first new edition of the catechism in 400 years. Catechism means "instruction," and this text will remain the standard reference for Catholics for many future generations. It is the authoritative summary of Catholic belief regarding the Church creeds, sacraments, commandments, and prayers. To get some idea of the level of detail with which the Catechism engages Catholic doctrine, consider that 17 pages of explanation accompany the opening words of the Apostle's Creed ("I Believe in God the Father"). The book is exceptionally well organized, with line-by-line explanations of every conceivable aspect of orthodox Catholic belief. Extensive cross-referencing, indexing, footnotes, and "In Brief" summaries of each section further ease the project of finding the precise answers to any questions a reader might have. Even the layout of information on the page is easy on the eyes, with wide margins for readers who wish to make notes. Furthermore, the back cover features a true rarity in the annals of world literature: a blurb by the Pope. --Michael Joseph Gross

One of the most well-known and relied-upon reference works of all time has been updated and revised! The twelve volumes of the revised Butler's Lives of the Saints correspond to the months of the year; each contains entries on saints with feast days in that month. The volumes January, May, June, October, and November are available, with volumes for the remaining months to follow every spring and fall. The final volume, December, will include a complete index of the series.
Two major changes mark this revision: First, it has been updated in accordance with the revised Roman Martyrology of the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome. Second, maximum space has been allotted to authenticated achievements and contributions of the saints, omitting information of doubtful origin.
Beautifully and solidly bound, this edition will have a long and useful life on the shelf of any parish, school, library, or home.

From Library Journal
Based on the Buber-Rosenzweig translation of the Hebrew Bible, completed in 1960, Fox's new rendering of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy is a breathtaking translation that captures the beautiful, majestic, and dynamic character of biblical Hebrew. In his translation, Fox (Jewish studies, Clark Univ.) lovingly caresses the language of the Bible so that readers may listen to it as it was heard and read by its earliest Jewish audience. Listen, for example, to his rendering of Exodus 3:14, the encounter between God and Moses: "God said to Moshe:/Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh/I will be-there howsoever I will be there." Fox provides keen and insightful notes and commentary, and the introductions to each book are crisp and fresh. The Five Books of Moses demonstrates the living character of scripture in the modern world. An essential purchase for all libraries.

Review
"A binding religious text, a historical document of the first importance, and a work of great literary imagination." --Edward Hirsch, New York Times Book Review
"Fox's translation has the rare virtue of making constantly visible in English the Hebraic quality of the original, challenging preconceptions of what the Bible is really like. A bracing protest against the bland modernity of all the recent English versions of the Bible." --Robert Alter, professor of comparative literature, University of California, Berkeley
"No serious Bible reader--whether Jewish, Christian, or secular--can afford to ignore this volume." --Jon D. Levenson, Harvard Divinity School

The Modern Catholic Encyclopedia combines a wealth of information with an attractive, easy-to-read format. It is an authoritative reference work for professionals, parishes, and families. Vatican II bequeathed to us new hopes, new dreams, new challenges; but above all, it gifted us with a fresh vision of the Church as a pilgrim people. This volume is an attempt to give a succinct and contemporary view of the beliefs, practices, and history of this people. It is edited for readers in English-speaking countries, drawn together by a common language and by shared pastoral concerns and challenges. Consequently, men and women from the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and Britain have written this work for a multinational readership. Its topics and themes have been chosen to meet the inquiries and religious curiosity of people today; therefore, emphasis is given to contemporary concerns and contemporary figures. Over 1,400 cross-referenced entries cover a wide range of subjects. The Modern Catholic Encyclopedia also includes over 250 illustrations, providing valuable visual information and adding to the attractiveness of this handsome volume.

Booknews
A popular but authoritative reference providing a succinct, contemporary view of the beliefs, practices, and history of the modern Catholic Church and Catholic people, with an emphasis on the shared pastoral concerns of a multinational, English-speaking readership. It is a work of and for its time, as reflected in the great amount of attention devoted to contemporary men and women and to modern questions and problems (thus Thomas Merton receives greater attention than Thomas a Kempis, and the role of women in the Church today is treated in two lengthy entries). A 16-page glossy color section depicts the life of Jesus in sacred art from the 10th century to the present. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

From Booklist
This book will be of interest to public and academic libraries needing an update to the New Catholic Encyclopedia (McGraw-Hill, 1967; supplements: 1974, 1979, 1989). It is aimed at the layperson, both Catholic and non-Catholic. Provided are simple definitions for terms, longer entries for broader subjects, and 29 feature articles of several pages each (e.g., Bible, The Papacy). The latter articles are sometimes not in exact alphabetical order but are listed in the table of contents.
McBrien, a theology professor at the University of Notre Dame, commissioned more than 4,500 entries on Catholic doctrine, worship, history, culture, art, literature, and biblical scholarship. There are entries on Catholicism in various countries, biographies, information on other religions, and discussions of complex moral and social issues. Such diverse subjects as Transubstantiation, the Shroud of Turin, Mother Teresa, Limbo, the Soviet pseudosynods of the 1940s, and various apparitions of the Virgin Mary are covered, along with such nonreligious topics as Romanticism, Big Bang Theory, Relativity, and Phenomenology. All entries are signed, and pronunciation is provided when necessary. Bibliographies conclude lengthier entries. Parallel time lines of world history and of Catholicism open the book. Black-and-white photographs and line drawings accompany some entries; there are two inserts of color photographs. Maps and tables (e.g., "Liturgical Calendar" ) are also featured. There is no index, but see also references direct the reader to related articles.
While this is not an official publication of Notre Dame, a large number of contributing editors are faculty members there. There is representation from other religious authorities, including the Archbishop of Canterbury. Information is presented objectively, and controversies are handled in a straightforward manner. Such heretical movements as quietism and simony (the buying and selling of church offices) are defined in historical and social context. The lengthy article Women in the Church acknowledges that "The Church gets mixed reviews for its treatment of women over the centuries." Entries such as Birth Control and Ordination of Women note that there is division within the church on these topics.
This work will be helpful in providing answers for reference questions that range from the relatively trivial (Seven Deadly Sins) to the complex (Bioethics, God). With the Catechism of the Catholic Church (Doubleday, 1994) and John Paul II's Crossing the Threshold of Hope (Knopf, 1994) on recent best-seller lists, there will be a large audience for this excellent encyclopedia.

From Library Journal
This latest Oxford Companion contains more than 700 signed entries treating the formation, transmission, circulation, sociohistorical situation, interpretation, theology, uses, and influence of the Bible. Despite its dictionary arrangement and the encyclopedic nature of many of its entries, this volume does not fit the mold of standard Bible dictionaries and encyclopedias, which focus primarily on the Bible and on means of understanding it in context. Unlike them, this companion aims to "trace the Bible's ongoing significance in such areas as the arts, law, politics, and literature." Entries written by over 250 leading international scholars reflect the current state of biblical scholarship. Topics are generally well selected, though it is not clear why Mormonism and Christian Science are the only nontraditional Christian groups treated, nor why the Scofield Reference Bible is the only special edition of the Bible considered separately. Still, this well-written, authoritative work will be particularly useful to general readers and to students and scholars working in non-biblical fields.

From Booklist
After covering most of the world's major national literatures and literary genres, with this volume the venerable Oxford Companion series finally addresses perhaps the most famous literary work of all. According to the introduction, The Oxford Companion to the Bible (OCB) "is an authoritative reference for key persons, places, events, concepts, institutions, and realities of biblical times." Taking what is called a "maximalist position," the volume treats "any book or part of a book that is recognized as canonical by any religious community." Editors Metzger, coeditor of The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha (1991), and Coogan, an associate editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, have compiled a work that will stand for some time as a definitive one-volume treatment of the Bible.
The Oxford Companion to the Bible opens with a list of the 267 contributors, most academically affiliated, who come from a variety of religious backgrounds. The volume is arranged alphabetically by topic, with cross-references within articles noted by an asterisk before the word, and many see references scattered throughout the work. All articles are signed. The volume concludes with a bibliography, an index, and 14 color maps (each a two-page spread) with an index. Entries vary greatly in length, from some 200 words for Blasphemy and Fear to more than 22 pages for Literature and the Bible and more than 29 pages for the longest entry, Translations. Many entries are subdivided into separate articles, each with a separate contributor (e.g., Interpretation, History of). Taking into account these separate articles, OCB features 706 articles within 668 entries.
As with other Oxford companions, the work features readable articles that the educated layperson can understand. Although the introduction states that it can be used by "students and teachers in high schools," some articles such as Ecclesiastes, The Book of, which describes the book as "less ecclesial than sapiential," may be difficult for the high school student.
Given the relatively low number of entries compared with other one-volume works on the Bible, it would be unfair to compare OCB with works such as Harper's Bible Dictionary, which contains some 3,700 biblical terms with entries on every name used at least three times in the Bible. OCB goes into greater detail on topics than Harper's but avoids an entry for every person or event. Unique to OCB are such thematic entries as African American Tradition and the Bible, Children's Bibles, Freud and the Bible, and Popular Culture and the Bible. Whereas Women receives 21/2 pages in Harper's, OCB devotes 12 pages to the topic. Traditional entries, such as those on most of the books of the Bible, are dealt with in equally notable fashion.
The one drawback to this volume is the lack of bibliographies at the

Each person approaches the reading of the Catechism of the Catholic Church from his or her own perspective. The questions we bring and the concerns that present themselves as we read the text are shaped by our roles and responsibilities within the life of the Church community. I come to this text as theologian and catechist. As theologian I ask a number of questions: What is in the Catechism? What theological perspective is reflected there? What is not in the Catechism and why is it not there? As catechist and catechetical theorist I ask other questions: Given the text, what are we to do with it? What is the role of the Catechism in the catechetical enterprise of the Church? How does our understanding of contemporary catechesis shape our approach to the Catechism? These are the questions I bring to a careful and critical reading of the Catechism.

From Library Journal
This dictionary has behind it the authority of American Academy of Religion, under whose auspices it was compiled. The 3200-plus articles are written by a team of 327 religion scholars, experts in their respective fields. Although in the introduction this team is called "international," only 32 members are from outside the United States, and over half of those are from Western Europe, the United Kingdom, and Canada. In addition to the standard alphabetically arranged articles on persons, holy days, rituals, deities, scriptures, etc., there are ten major articles dealing with ancient and modern religious traditions and one on the study of religion. Each of the standard articles begins with a clear, concise definition. Extensive cross references tie related articles together, though of the major articles, only "Religions of Antiquity," "New Religions," and "Religions of Traditional Peoples" provide lists of cross references. Though this is generally a thorough and well-written work, it has its shortcomings. The article "Goddess religion" speaks of "womanchurch" congregations but doesn't refer the reader to the article "Woman-church." The Sacred Name doctrine is mentioned without explanation in "Identity Christianity," and there is no article defining the term. Abortion is treated in a half-page article, but homosexuality (an equally controversial subject) is relegated to two brief paragraphs. Nonetheless, the HarperCollins dictionary compares well with other current one-volume dictionaries. Next to A New Dictionary of Religions (LJ 11/15/95), it lacks a bibliography, but it includes guides to pronunciation, a feature absent from the former as well as from Continuum Dictionary of Religion (Continuum, 1994) and Larousse Dictionary of Beliefs and Religions (LJ 11/1/94). Consequently, it is recommended by itself or as a complement to other dictionaries of religion.?Craig W. Beard, Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham Lib.

From Booklist
With the collaboration of the American Academy of Religion, an international team of scholars contributed more than 3,200 articles to this book. While entries are not signed, the forematter lists more than 300 contributed articles as well as the area editors who comprise the editorial board. The preface notes that the dictionary "seeks to expand public understanding of religion by going beyond the usual concentration on major world religions" ; thus the scope includes all geographic areas from the Paleolithic era to present times.
While the basic organization is that of a dictionary with concise entries on specific topics such as names, rituals, places, and festivals and more extensive entries for such topics as Mysticism or Japanese Folk Religion, there are also 11 long feature articles about major world religions, broad categories of religion such as the religions of antiquity, and an essay on the academic study of religion. Maps and time lines are included where appropriate. The broad essays on historical religious traditions are complemented by entries on such central topics as art and architecture, authoritative texts, the festal cycle, etc. Thus the broad essay on Islam is related to such articles as Islam (ethics) and Islam (life cycle).
The preface notes that the dictionary devotes significant attention to religions of traditional peoples, extinct religions, and new religious movements. While not as extensive as America's Alternative Religions (SUNY Press, 1995) for North America, there is indeed fairly comprehensive coverage of new religious movements throughout the world. While mainstream Christianity is well represented in the dictionary, it seems to be assumed that information on this faith is readily available in other resources. For example, two lines are given to the concept Guardian Angel while Guardian Spirit in Native American traditions is 38 lines. Articles that compare concepts in religions are useful, but once again emphasis is often on non-Christian religions. Under Death, for example, the concept is discu

The index offers the list of saints from the complete edition, and includes all new canonizations and new dates, making it eh most up-to-date listing of saints available. Butlter's Lives of the Saints remains a remarkable reference source and, through its comprehensive biographies, a valuable aid to devotion and a rich source of historical information.

In 1956, scholars from L'Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem set their minds to translating the Scriptures from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts, hoping they could preserve the most sacred Christian traditions and stories. By 1966, the first English-language Jerusalem Bible was published. Since then it has become a favored text for lay readers and scholars alike. The accessible language and richly recounted stories, poetry, and letters in this edition is consistent with previous versions. However, this latest version stands out because of its clear format--clean double columns with easy-to-read type and quick reference headings.

Catholic readers have made The Jeru salem Bible (1966) a perennially popu lar study Bible. The Jerusalem-based French scholars, upon whose transla tion the work is based, published a re vised French edition in 1973, incorpo rating recent research. General editor Wansbrough and his colleagues base The New Jerusalem Bible on this revi sion, though they have depended less on the French version and more on the original languages than did the English translators. They have thoroughly re vised everything. The biblical text is loftier, more literal, and less colloquial. It is also less gender-specific, when this approach does not do violence to the original. A worthwhile purchase wher ever the earlier edition is popular. Richard S. Watts, San Bernardino Cty. Lib., Cal.
