The New York Times Book Review, Kenneth L. Woodward
Kennedy gives an insider's account of the crises Bernardin endured in public.... In the end, the Cardinal who served the church was sustained by it. My Brother Joseph wants us to know that if Bernardin is ever canonized, it will not be because of the important pastoral letter he wrote for the nation's bishops on war and peace, or because of the "seamless garment" ethic he developed so that capital punishment, abortion and euthanasia could be recognized as a contagion of violence against humankind. It will be because the best of ecclesiastical bureaucrats was also the best of men.

Book Description
Can God Intervene in Our Lives?
C.S. Lewis trains his impeccable logic on the question of miracles, setting up a philosophical framework for the proposition that supernatural events can happen in this world. Focusing his inquiry on the feasibility of miracles in general, rather than on anecdotal evidence for specific miracles, Lewis builds a solid and compelling argument for the acceptance of divine intervention.

Reading a Max Lucado book is as comfortable as having coffee and conversation with a close friend. He Chose the Nails: What God Did to Win Your Heart is signature Lucado: warm, conversational storytelling blended with scripture, humor, and vulnerability.
Lucado invites us to understand the symbols surrounding Christ's crucifixion and celebrate the significance of the promises they offer. From the sign in different languages tacked to the cross ("I will speak to you in your language") to the burial clothing ("I can turn your tragedy into triumph"), he speaks of each symbol as a "gift of grace" that reveals God's love for mankind.
Lucado takes us to Calvary and shows us our sins nailed between the hand of Jesus and the cross. "You've made some bad choices in life, haven't you," writes Lucado. "You've chosen the wrong friends, maybe the wrong career, even the wrong spouse. You look back over your life and say, 'If only I could make up for those bad choices.' You can. One good choice for eternity offsets a thousand bad ones on earth. The choice is yours."
Whether he's bantering around phrases like "the hall monitors of holiness" or crafting a deeper expository on the crown of thorns, Lucado neatly balances the task of making his words accessible to a broad audience while delivering a meaty message on God's greatest sacrifice. Pick up this insightful read, and you'll be glad you made the choice. --Cindy Crosby
From Publishers Weekly
Lucado's understated homiletical style has propelled sales of more than 15 million books and made him the first author to win three Gold Medallion awards for Christian Book of the Year (Just Like Jesus, 1999; In the Grip of Grace, 1997; and When God Whispers Your Name, 1995). His loyal following will in no way be disappointed with this latest offering, which focuses on the "gifts" of the cross, including the soldiers' spit, the crown of thorns, the nails, the wine-soaked sponge, the burial garments and Pilate's sign identifying Jesus as the King of the Jews. Each of these tragic objects teaches Christians something about the nature of God, says Lucado. The wine-soaked sponge, for example, offered when Jesus spoke of his thirst while dying on the cross, demonstrates how God through Jesus took on the entire human experience, complete with its suffering. "To take on our sins is one thing, but to take on our sunburns, our sore throats? To experience death, yesDbut to put up with life?" God did this so that his followers would fully trust him, Lucado explains, and know that their pain was understood. Lucado uses good humor and everyday situations (such as coping with road rage) to bring his points home. His skill in highlighting even the smallest detail of the crucifixion scene will prove an epiphany for many readers. (Aug.)

Book Description
Why does the Bible contain so many stories of hurting people? Though their situations vary, their conditions don't. They have nowhere to turn. Yet before their eyes stands a never-say-die Galilean who majors in stepping in when everyone else steps out. Lucado reminds us that the purpose of these portraits isn't to tell us what Jesus did-but rather to remind us what Jesus still does.

From Publishers Weekly
Lucado, a pastor and the award-winning author of the bestselling Tell Me the Story and He Still Moves Stones , among others, has here composed a series of short stories for those who, he says, might not realize "that God has written their true name upon His hand." Allegories, the retelling of Bible stories (i.e., Moses becomes an office janitor to whom God speaks through a mop bucket) and even Lucado's own journeys are used to show God's grace and holiness and to hold out hope in the midst of life. Lucado is blessed with the gift of storytelling. And sometimes that gift shines in these short stories; at other times, however, the successful storyteller seems instead to be riding on his own coattails and merely employing an easy formula.

People ages 5-95 share their discoveries of life and love in another collection of strong adages for daily living. All begin with "I've learned" and include some sage reflections (". . . both a young child and an old person can make me feel young. ") Excellent little nuggets for thought.
Book Description
"On the morning of my fifty-first birthday," writes author H. Jackson Brown, "I thought it would be interesting and maybe even enlightening to jot down a few things more than half a century of living had taught me." Soon he had accumulated quite a list. When a friend said he would contribute a few ideas of his own, Jackson decided to invite other friends and acquaintances -- from kindergarten kids and teenagers to senior citizens -- to join the effort.
Live And Learn And Pass It On contains the best of their answers, the combined wisdom of thousands of years of living. Here is what we have been taught by our parents, spouses, children, pastors, teachers, friends and enemies. They are lessons learned from loving and winning and loving and losing, the school of hard knocks, and the old method of trial and error. "Editing their entries convinced me that wisdom knows no age." Jackson says. "Regardless of how much we know, it is never enough. School is always in session, and life challenges us to excel at being both insatiable student and inspired teacher."

by Judy Tarjanyi, "Virginia couple spread word about visions of Mary", The Washington Times, November 19,1994. A13
Modern Protestantism has long been awash in ominous predictions about the "end times," from warnings about the numeric combination 666 to speculations about the identity of the Antichrist. Now Roman Catholics are adding their voices to the visionary choir through a host of Marian apparitions chronicled in "The Thunder of Justice", a self-published book by a Sterling, Va., couple that has quickly become a Catholic best seller. Mr. Flynn said he thinks the Marian messages are similar to those being advanced by Protestant eschatologists, although they use different language. "Mary speaks about the mark on the hand, wrist, forehead, the beast of Reelation, about 666," he said. "She is ripping open the Book of Revelation and teaching Catholics about it. It's extraordinary material. People would be stunned by the degree of detail if they would care to look at it. This is next year's news."
by Richard Szczepanowski, "Thunder of Justice echoes with the sound of God's love and mercy", Catholic Standard, Binghampton, NY, February 3, 1994
Authors Maureen and Ted Flynn want to make one thing perfectly clear: They are not predicting the end of the world. This husband and wife writing team say their book The Thunder of Justice is, in fact, a documentation of "the love and mercy God has for us." The Flynns have compiled messages, warnings and predictions from reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. Some of the apparitions have been approved by the Vatican, some have been granted limited approval by the local Church, and some are still under investigation. Despite the direness of the events depicted in the book, Maureen says she "particularly enjoyed writing the book - it has given me a deep sense of joy." They stress that the book is not a timetable or prediction of the second coming of Jesus Christ or the end of the world. IT is merely a call to return to God and the sacraments. It is, they say, an uplifting book.
