Book Description
Powerful testimonies of Evangelicals who became Catholic These eleven personal conversion accounts are unlike any you've ever read. They're packed with biblical, theological, and historical proofs for Catholicism. Each year thousands of atheists, Evangelicals, Mormons, Fundamentalists, and Pentecostals are being surprised by Catholic truth and these converts tell you why. In his foreword Scott Hahn described his reaction to "Surprised by Truth":
"While reading each of these incredible journeys I laughed, cried, grunted affirmations, and basically relived my own journey into the Catholic Church. I heard echoes of my own struggles in their words. I relived the anguish I experienced on that lonely and sometimes frightening path of conversion, and I relived the deep, abiding joy of coming home. But enough, Read these stories. They're prayerful, heavy-on-doctrine, evangelical, scriptural witnesses of people who discovered that what they had once thought was the most 'unbiblical' church is really the Church of the Bible."

From Our Editors
According to the author of Hitler's Pope, the Catholic Church is close to schism. John Cornwell argues that increasing stress between conservative elements and advocates of reform will reach critical levels after the death of John Paul II.
From the Publisher
"Redefines the entire history of the 20th century."(The Washington Post)
"Explosive . . . Cornwell makes a case in Hitler's Pope that is very difficult to refute."(The New York Times Book Review)
As John Paul II's papacy draws to a close, the Church, its policies, and its future are being scrutinized by governments, religious leaders, and millions of Catholics around the globe. The election of the next pope will have a greater impact on world affairs than that of the next president of the United States?or the leader of any single nation. In his controversial bestseller Hitler's Pope, John Cornwell eloquently expressed both disagreement with the Catholic Church and his own deeply felt commitment to it. Here, he examines a Catholic Church in crisis, providing a penetrating overview of this institution at a crossroads.
In Breaking Faith, Cornwell explains why he left the Church but returned to it after twenty years because he "couldn't do without it" and because he is convinced that Catholicism still has the power to make the world a better place. Cornwell addresses issues that range from the core concepts of everyday practice?confession, liturgy, sexual practices, divorce?to issues that concern the organization of the church globally including the changing face of priesthood, the ordination of women, and the challenge of the conservative movement worldwide. He argues that the Church is a vital channel for good works and a source of broad moral direction, even for those who are not bound by its strictures.
Cornwell has spent a lifetime thinking about individual choice and the Catholic Church. He offers readers ahighly provocative, personal, and passionate book that explores both the striking divisions in today's Church and the strengths upon which it can draw to survive and thrive in the coming century. Breaking Faith is sure to spark worldwide debate among Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
Author Biography: John Cornwell is an award-winning journalist and director of the Science and Human Dimension Project at Cambridge University. He is a regular contributor to the Sunday Times of London and to many religious affairs publications around the world. He is also the author of Hitler's Pope, A Thief in the Night, and Power to Harm.
From The Critics
Publishers Weekly
After daring to challenge the legacy of Pope Pius XII in Hitler's Pope, Cornwell has taken on another daunting subject: the future of the church he left as a young adult and to which he later returned. This latest work mingles the author's personal memories and feelings with history, statistics and some analysis. Sometimes Cornwell tries to play the role of journalist, merely reporting how both sides view the current state of affairs in the church. But as one who is clearly identified with the liberal Catholic wing, he can hardly mask his displeasure with those who represent the church's conservative element, particularly the present pope. Overall, Cornwell paints a dark picture of contemporary Catholicism and lays much of the blame for it at the feet of John Paul II, a "master of spin" who he says has demoralized millions of Catholics by accusing them of sinful sexual conduct. Apart from getting a new pope, though, Cornwell is not particularly clear about what should be done to remedy the church's problems. On one hand, he concedes to conservatives their point that Catholicism can't survive by making itself look like other religions, but on the other he seems to be urging the church to conform to the world by adjusting its teachings on sexuality. Regardless, fellow liberal Catholics will find much here with which to commiserate, and those seeking a provocative viewpoint will not be disappointed. (Oct.) From the Publisher
Catholic moral theology is a living tradition in which each generation must understand, appropriate, and live the Christian message in the light of its own history, culture, and time. "The Catholic tradition," argues Charles E. Curran in this new, meticulously reasoned set of essays, "must be in dialogue with present realities, sometimes criticizing them severely and at other times learning from them." Curran begins by examining the tensions existing in the Roman Catholic church today and suggests why they are more severe than they should be. He argues that official Catholic social teaching in sexual areas and Catholic ecclesiology have not incorporated a moral theology based on creative fidelity; he calls for a change in official sexual teaching, ecclesiology, and the exercise of the hierarchical magisterium on the basis of the methodological approaches found in contemporary official Catholic teaching. Richard A. McCormick, Curran suggests, is one contemporary Catholic moral theologian who successfully illustrates creative fidelity by employing the casuistic method of the Jesuit tradition in moral theology to evaluate the changing problems of our contemporary life. Curran discusses perennial issues in moral theology that take on crucial importance in the changing realities of our contemporary existence - the relationship between Christian and human morality, divine providence and human responsibility, academic freedom, and military force. Throughout the volume, while fully aware that the Roman Catholic church and moral theology will always know and experience the tensions of creative fidelity, Curran challenges himself and his readers to make certain that these tensions contribute to the ongoing life of the church.

From Library Journal
Catholic evangelical activist Fournier candidly recounts his own spiritual journey leading him to service as dean and general counsel at Franciscan University (Ohio) and to close relationships with prominent members of the Christian Right. Approaching contemporary secularism in a positive way, he weaves historical and scriptural perspective in a well-reasoned call to unity among people of faith in the face of a culture of self-centeredness and death. He urges building Catholic-Evangelical alliances based on the Gospel message and discusses the unprecedented 1994 60-point document "Evangelicals and Catholics Together" (included in this work). Here is no easily caricatured ultraconservatism but serious, often scholarly reflections on the movements of the Spirit in our times, a refutation of both doomsayers and bigots, and a summoning to celebrating strengths in diversity. Recommended for ecumenical collections.

In 1994, the Catechism of the Catholic Church became a national bestseller. In the wake of this publishing phenomenon, many books explored what Catholics believe, but few offered insights into how Catholics practice their faith. Ghezzi, v-p and editorial director of Servant Books, offers what he calls a "primer on putting the Catholic faith into practice." The first section of the book explores "Being Catholic" and provides brief reflections on conversion, discipleship and faith. He also offers a brief overview of the history of the Catholic church. The second section, "Receiving Daily Graces," describes in some detail the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Eucharist as well as the structure of the Mass. Ghezzi's third section focuses on "Opening to God" and meditates on the spirituality of Mary and the saints, the work of the Holy Spirit and the importance of daily Bible reading and prayer. The final two sections explore ethical living in daily life and politics, as well as participation in Christian community and family life. Each chapter contains suggestions for further reading, ideas for individual or group study and questions for reflection and discussion. Ghezzi's humorous anecdotes and pastoral prose offer a useful introduction to Catholic practice.

Written by a Roman Catholic college chaplain with 25 years' experience in campus ministry, this book challenges the idea that Roman Catholic students have largely ceased practicing their faith. Yet the author also shows that some of those most active as students become disaffected after graduation, when they find that American parishes do not meet their needs. Some of the issues Hunt discusses are campus life; behavior, morality, and sexuality; parents and family; growth and decision; prayer, spirituality, and the Bible; Catholic identity; and campus ministry. He concludes with ten guidelines for facilitating the postcollege development of faith. Although it focuses on Roman Catholic experience, this book will be valuable to other religious groups as well.

Book Description
This book is a collection of stimulating, informal discussions in which Msgr. Knox re-examines some of the fundamental precepts of the Catholic faith as well as the formidable challenges facing Catholics today. Writing with his usual effortless grace and sparkling wit, Knox confronts such controversial topics as what is religion, man's doubts about God, the miracles of Christ, salvation outside the Church, sin and forgiveness, the Christian notion of marriage, and the resurrection of the body. The incisive religious insight and spiritual depth peppered with mischievous humor are the characteristic hallmarks of Knox's writing. He emphasizes that the Church in her teaching and sacramental life is a secret stream nourishing the world.
The Hidden Stream is a lucid refresher course in the teachings of the Church for informed Catholics, a pleasant "must" for uninformed ones, and a bulwark for all concerned with explaining the faith to others.

From Library Journal
The late Lewis, Oxford professor, scholar, author, and Christian apologist, presents the listener with a case for orthodox Christianity. This is definitely not the shouting, stomping, sweating, spitting televangelist fare so often parodied; Lewis employs logical arguments that are eloquently expressed. He describes those doctrines that the four major denominations in Britain (Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic) would have in common, e.g., original sin, the transcendent Creator God, and the divinity of Jesus as well as his atonement and bodily resurrection. Geoffrey Howard reads both works, and his performance is superb; he is clear and unhurried, giving just the right emphasis and/or inflection. The volume on the Blackstone edition is recorded at a higher level than HarperAudio's. Otherwise there were no perceived differences in the recordings. If your institution can afford it, the Blackstone production would be preferred because of its sturdy case and the announcement of side changes. Whether or not one agrees with Lewis's arguments, it is a pleasure to hear such a skillful reading of an eloquent work. Public libraries as well as institutions that teach religion/theology or speech should consider. Michael T. Fein, Central Virginia Community Coll., Lynchburg

Considered a significant twentieth-century book by Christians of various traditions of faith, MERE CHRISTIANITY is well-suited to being read because the book is a revised version of some addresses given by Lewis, an Oxford literature professor, on the BBC in the early 1940s. Thus, the text, which makes an argument for Christianity, was written in an informal, conversational style. With his tenor voice, Howard sounds like a friendly academic and reads with appropriate pauses and emphasis. His subdued Oxbridge (the English accent of Oxford and Cambridge) accent is inviting and pleasant, showing none of the pretention one might expect from an Oxford don. M.L.C. As they move into their middle years, women and men religious and clergy find that their needs for intimacy escalate. Their earlier understandings of sexuality and intimacy, taught to them during the time of pre-Vatican II Church and society, no longer answer their questions. This compassionate book lays bare their struggles, exposes their questions, and offers answers by vowed celibates themselves in their search for authenticity. Based on her fifteen years of experience with vowed celibates, combined with original research with 333 individuals, psychologist Sheila Murphy sheds new light on the practice of intimacy among women and men who were expressly forbidden to develop "particular friendships," and shows what they are now thinking and doing to incorporate a meaningful understanding of sexuality and intimacy into their personal lives. In so doing, the author also reveals how in many ways these individuals are psychologically healthier in their relationships than women and men in other life situations. A Delicate Dance is filled with scores of personal stories that bring to life the doubts and convictions, the humanity and the love of Catholic clergy and religious today. It is an honest open forum that invites other vowed celibates to begin talking more freely about these important but previously unspoken topics.

Book Description
An exhaustive Catholic critique of premillennial dispensationalism, the "pretrib rapture," the Left Behind phenomenon, and Fundamentalist eschatology, written by a former Fundamentalist/dispensationalist. Examines the historical, biblical, and theological roots of the "left behind" theology and the belief in a rapture event separate from the Second Coming. Also contains chapters on the Book of Revelation, the millennial kingdom, and Catholic eschatology.
From the Publisher
A powerful and timely book, Will Catholics Be "Left Behind"? was authored by a former Fundamentalist and is a thorough critique of the popular Fundamentalist notion of the "Rapture"-the belief that Christians will be removed from earth prior to a time of Tribulation and the Second Coming. It examines the theological, historical, and Biblical basis for "premillennial dispensationalism", the belief system based around the Rapture, and popularized in the best-selling Left Behind books and taught by "Bible prophecy" writers Tim LaHaye, Hal Lindsey, Jack Van Impe, and many others.
Written for both the lay person and the serious student, this book combines an engaging, popular approach with detailed footnotes and exhaustive research. Beginning with the big picture, it focuses first on key concepts such as eschatology, the Parousia, and the relationship between the Kingdom and the Church. It then examines the Book of Revelation, providing insights into the nature and purpose of that difficult, final book of the Bible. Another chapter looks at the concept of the "millennium" and how it has been understood by various Christians over the centuries. Olson then shows how Left Behind creator LaHaye's many works of "Bible prophecy" are filled with attacks on Catholicism, and often rely on sensationalism, shaky scholarship, and subjective interpretations of Scripture
Olson, a former dispensationalist who now edits Envoy magazine, also presents a history of apocalyptic belief and theology, beginning with the Early Church Fathers and including the Montanists, St. Augustine, Joachim of Fiore, the Protestant Reformers, and the American Puritans. He shows how John Nelson Darby, an ex-Anglican priest, developed the premillennial dispensationalist system, which hinges on the Rapture, in the 1830s and how Darby relied upon faulty assumptions about Jesus Christ, the Church, and the Bible.
The second part of the book, "A Catholic Critique of Dispensationalism," focuses on three important topics: the relationship between Israel, the Church, and the Kingdom; the interpretation of Scripture; and the nature of the Rapture event. Filled with a wealth of information drawn from both Protestant and Catholic sources, this section provides a complete rebuttal to the premillennial dispensationalist system and the "left behind" theology. The book concludes with a reflection on the Catholic understanding of the end times, salvation history, and the final judgement. Glossaries of key persons and terms are also included.
A strong, but fair, critique of a dangerous and popular belief, Will Catholics Be "Left Behind"? provides Catholics and Protestants, lay people and clergy, and students and scholars with important answers and information about the roots and meaning of the "Rapture".

Until Brother John Raymond compiled this book, there was very little in the way of keeping track of Web sites for and about Roman Catholics and Catholicism. Raymond went beyond mere compilation, tracking down resources and investigating, screening, and sorting them. The thousands of sites that made it into Catholics on the Internet--everything from the Vatican's Web site to a variety of Catholic chat areas--are in accordance with the actual teachings of the Church.
Brother Raymond writes in a friendly and inviting voice. Assuming that the reader doesn't have a lot of experience on the Net, he begins with a short, comforting description and then shows newcomers how to get online and into some of the most user-friendly Catholic gathering spots.
While most of the book deals with Catholic resources on the World Wide Web, Brother Raymond doesn't overlook the rich content elsewhere. For example, chapter 2 is devoted to the wide variety of Catholic mailing lists available and chapter 4, for those on a tight budget, begins with a section entitled "How to Do Everything by E-Mail." Other types of resources listed throughout the book include Web sites of dioceses, parishes, and churches around the world; Catholic organizations; sites devoted to doctrine, history, and biblical research; Catholic schools, colleges, ministries, and communities; and Catholic culture, media, history, and writings. Brother Raymond includes information sources for children as well as adults. This is a resource that any Catholic, or anyone interested in Catholicism, will find valuable.

In this reference to Catholic sites, one notices in his comments both an appreciation for the technical and concern for the practical. In Part 1, he offers Internet information for the newbie?what is the Internet, what are mailing lists and homepages, and how to get connected, along with beginning technical concerns. Part 2 is the heart of the book?listings of homepages and directories as well as a long introduction describing many sites on the Internet pertaining to all varieties of Catholicism. This catalog of over 2000 sites and endless files in links give the reader/seeker a resource guide to use again and again. Brother John's short comments on each site let one know what to expect before visiting. A large section of the catalog consists of bookmarks arranged A to Z with a comprehensive description. Clearly, this is an Internet guide on par with any on the market; recommended for most libraries.?Leroy Hommerding, Citrus Lib. Sys. Inverness, Fla.

From Publishers Weekly
A professional jongleur (storyteller), Stivender offers rich material here in anecdotes based on growing up Catholic in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The first-born of an Irish Catholic mother and a Lutheran father, he missed the "call" to priestly vocation that his parochial school teachers envisioned for their prize pupil. Instead, his inquisitive imagination wrestled merrily with the pseudo-military nature of his Catholic education; with what he calls the game of "doctrinal tennis" played in the classroom by teacher and students; and with his all-too-literal interpretations of pious conventions, such as accommodating one's guardian angel. Stivender's storytelling emanates from a warm familial setting and resonates with affectionate humor while he takes swipes at the rites of passage of a more innocent time. These tales of Catholic culture amuse while they recall a history shared by many.

Twentieth-century Catholicism was radically changed by the Second Vatican Council, and professional storyteller Stivender provides a delightful trip down pre-Vatican II's memory lane with stories from his own Catholic boyhood in the 1950s. This abridged release includes five tales, beginning with a piece on his first-grade introduction to Catholic school etiquette (e.g., one left room between seats for the guardian angels) and concluding with a paean to his fifth-grade love. Stivender's approach is consistently gentle, poking amiable fun at a long-lost era. The author narrates with a deadpan voice that accentuates his low-key humor. Recommended for public library collections.

These essays, all originally written for The Christian Century magazine, of which Wall is the editor, will primarily interest those following currents of thought in modern Christian theology. A notable diversity of perspectives is represented and not all authors limit themselves to (or even address) the topic given in the book's title. Elizabeth Achtemeier, who teaches Bible at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va., bluntly notes that "My mind has not changed a great deal, because the biblical story has not changed." But she adds that in disempowering women, the church has not lived up to the gospel, thus contributing to today's "feminist mess." A different view comes from lesbian feminist theologian Carter Heyward, who has come to see the "link between the healing process . . . and the work of liberation , " between the spiritual and the political. Jesuit Richard A. McCormick, relating many of his changes of mind to Vatican II, says he feels less need today to find certainty in what he or the church teaches. University Professor at Boston University Peter L. Berger explores the symbiosis of "mainline Protestantism" and the middle class, particularly that section involved in "the production and distribution of symbolic knowledge" through education, the media and social welfare programs.

| The Courage to Be Catholic: Crisis, Reform, and the Future of the Church Author: Weigel, George ISBN: 0-465-09260-8 LCCN: 2003271463 Dewey: 282/.73/090511 22 Number: |

From Publishers Weekly
American Catholics divided over the future direction of their church have managed to agree on one thing in recent months: much reform is needed in the wake of the clergy sexual-abuse scandal. Weigel, a theologian and papal biographer (Witness to Hope: The Biography of John Paul II), outlines the shape he thinks it should take in this incisive analysis. More than a problem of clerical misbehavior, he writes, the present crisis is rooted in the church's failure to be faithful to its own teachings. He traces the current woes to a "culture of dissent" that he says was allowed to flourish after the reforming Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), creating an internal schism in the church. After the "truce of 1968," which allowed church leaders to publicly oppose Humanae Vitae, the papal encyclical on artificial contraception, without fear of reprisal, he says it became clear that the Vatican would not support bishops who wanted to maintain discipline among priests and theologians. Weigel lays much of the blame for the sexual-abuse scandal at the feet of the American bishops, whom he chides for acting more like corporate managers than apostles. But his criticism also extends to Rome, where he points to deficiencies in canon law and the Vatican's communications strategy. As expected, Weigel dismisses such reforms as abolishing priestly celibacy and ordaining women priests, but he counters with practical solutions, including changes in the way bishops are selected. This book should stimulate discussion among both progressive and conservative Catholics.

From Library Journal
The Catholic Church in the United States is reeling from the scandal associated with the sexual abuse of minors by priests. Weigel, who has written a magisterial biography of Pope John Paul II (Witness to Hope), examines the predicament in this extended essay. He proposes that the church is in crisis, as understood in its radical sense: it is a time of judgment, also an opportunity for reflection and reform. Weigel dismisses the allegations that the sexual misbehavior of priests is the result of celibacy, a repressive sexual ethic, or an authoritarian church structure. His thesis is that the crisis is, at heart, one of fidelity. Priests have abandoned their identity as living icons of Christ, bishops have functioned more as managers than as shepherds, and the larger Catholic community has drifted from its Christ-given roots to a kind of "Catholic Lite." Weigel argues that the remedy to the present situation is to return to a classic Catholicism, deepening the reforms begun by Vatican Council II and urged by John Paul II throughout his pontificate. His argument that priests are "ontologically changed" by ordination needs significant nuance, and over three-quarters of the U.S. bishops about whom this papal loyalist complains have been appointed by the present pope. Weigel's contention may work within the confines of his perspective. All Catholics, particularly those he calls members of the "Catholic Lite," may not agree with his viewpoint or his assessment. Recommended for seminary libraries and for public libraries with a significant religion circulation. David I. Fulton, Coll. of Saint Elizabeth, Morristown, NJ

Book Description
Here are the compelling stories of eleven "reverts", Catholics who fell away from the Church and eventually came back home. Some of the people are very well-known, like Fr. John Corapi, Rick Strom and Jesse Romero, and others are known only in their smaller circles. But each person's story of why he left the Catholic Church and why he returned is a unique and moving tale of God's mercy, love and grace. There is one common denominator, though, among the writers of Welcome Home! To parapharse Archbishop Fulton Sheen, few hate the Catholic Chruch for what she teaches, but millions hate it for what they think she teaches. The defining moment of illuminating grace almost always came when our storytellers began to examine Catholic teaching for themselves.
